Biodegradable Silt Fence. Ideal for Ideal for bushland, riparian zones and floodplain area

Where Should You Install Silt Fences?
Silt fences should be installed prior soil disturbance (earth moving) begins, and down-slope from the construction area. Silt fences should always be installed along the contour of the slope you are protecting. If not installed correctly it can allow water to concentrate, increasing water flow, and the chance of the silt fence to be undermined and fail. If installing a silt fence on a downward slope you should be constructing “silt fence returns” or “j’s”, positioned perpendicular to the silt fence. These structures will capture sediment and slow water flow. Silt fences are not designed to withstand high flow rates of water, and should therefore be located where water can form shallow pools behind the silt fence.
Standard Silt Fence Installation
Aussie Environmental can install a number of different types of silt fencing. Our cheapest and most requested is our standard Silt fencing. Aussie Environmental provide fast and efficient quality installation. Our standard silt fences are constructed using a UV stabilised polypropylene sediment fence material secured to hardwood timber stakes with a pneumatic stapler. Aussie Environmental uses a high-tech trechless system when installing their silt fences where no trenching or back filling is required. Silt Fences can be used in conjunction with other forms of erosion control methods like coir logs, erosion control blankets (jute mat /coir blanket), and diversion drains with sediment or retention basins. We services from civil, council & private land owners and are members of the International Erosion Control Association.

Dial Before You Dig
Silt Fence Installation
Below is a step by step process to install a silt fence by using the trenching method.
Step 1
Determine the most suitable or safest position is for silt fence installation. Dig a trench along this line using a trenching machine or digging tool. The trench should be a minimum of 150mm deep.
Step 2
Hammer the fence stakes or posts into the ground insuring they are secure and positioned on the downward side of the slope. The supporting pegs can be hardwood timber or steel pickets ranging from 900mm to 1650mm high.
Step 3
Attach silt fence fabric to the supporting pegs by either a stapler, tie wire or zip ties. Make sure the fabric is well secured as these pegs will be under immense strain from the captured silt and sediment.
Step 4
Pack the soil down into the trench, especially around the pegs as these are the structural points of the silt fence.
Reasons Why Silt Fences May Fail
Improper placement of silt fence to capture silt and sediment
Silt fence is constructed in concentrated flow paths
Inadequate trench depth with little or no soil compaction
Inadequate attachment of filter fabric to pegs or posts
Failure to maintain the silt fence after installation
Silt fence not installed along contours, producing concentrated water flow.
Lack of “silt fence returns” or “j’s” structures needed to slow water flows
Inadequate drainage through construction site
Inadequate strength due to insufficient pegs being used
