Coir blankets are 100% natural coconut fibre that is manufactured into rolls in various grades and lengths. Coir is an abundant and renewable resource, increasingly used throughout the Civil and Landscape Industries in applications such as slope stabilisation, revegetation and bio-engineering. These blankets intercept runoff from heavy rains and dissipate the energy of flowing water and wind. Coir fibre promotes the growth of vegetation by absorbing water and preventing soil evaporation. Coir fibre is different to other natural fibres due to its very high lignin content, which increases the fibres strength and functional life of up to 3 years.

Installation:

Aussie Environmental Coir Blanket, also named Coir Matting is easy to install and is fully biodegradable. Apart from the usual maintenance required to sustain the vegetation, no further work is needed after the main installation.

  1. Prepare the area to be treated to a smooth even grade. Remove all protruding rocks, root stumps, etc.
  1. Lay the Coir Blanket rolls in the direction of water flow. Adjoining rolls should be overlapped by a minimum of 100mm.
  1. The Coir Blanket should be overlapped away from prevailing wind and water flow direction.
  1. A trench, no less than 200mm deep, should be dug around the whole area including the bottom, sides and top of work area, this will protect the edges from being lifted during rain or flooding events. Backfill the trench and compact.
  1. Depending on the steepness of the slope, the Coir Blankets should be pinned with approximately 3-4 pins per meter squared, (i.e. the more pins used, the more secure the matting will be) with particular attention being paid to edges and joins. blankets joins should overlap by approximately 100mm with the top run overlapping bottom edge.
  1. If high water velocities are expected, Coir blanket should be pinned at reduced centres.
  1. Pin down the blankets using steel pegs to suit the site.

What is coir?

Coir Fiber Roll From Aussie Environmental

Despite being one of the leaders in environmental policies and laws, Australia is still struggling with a massive soil erosion problem and it’s a threat that needs to be brought under control to safeguard our environment and waterways.

There certainly isn’t a lack of options when it comes to soil erosion protection products and for many years, synthetic, non-biodegradable controls have been used. However, the industry as a whole has become more conscious of fighting environmental issues with environmentally friendly solutions and we now have a host of effective biodegradable control options to choose from.

Coir products, like coir blanket rolls, are the latest in environmentally friendly innovation that Aussie Environmental is using to help prevent soil erosion and re-establish damaged habitats.

What Are Coir Blankets?

Coir blankets or coir mats are sheets of 100% coconut fibre material that are used to protect soil and slopes from environmental degradation. The sheets can be made into a variety of grades and a variety of sizes to suit the land area that they will cover.

The coir blanket acts as a protective barrier from natural elements such as heavy rain and strong wind that contribute to soil erosion. They are mainly used on slopes or steeper areas to protect exposed soil from water run-off and further erosion.

Why Use Coco Fiber Rolls In Queensland?

There are several reasons why coco fiber rolls are making a name for themselves across the landscaping, bio-engineering, and environmental preservation industries. Here are just a few of the benefits of using a coir mat:

  • Easy to install: coco coir blankets are super simple to install and can even be installed by homeowners by themselves in their gardens.
  • Don’t need to be removed: The problem with synthetic geotextiles is that they normally have to be broken up and removed after a few years as they do not biodegrade. This could undo all the good that they have done for the soil. Coir blankets don’t need to be removed as they are biodegradable and will simply become part of the soil eventually.
  • Holding ability, slow water run-off: One of the best things about these coconut fiber rolls> is that they have the ability to help with habitat regeneration. Plant chutes can be planted into the blanket (cut a small hole) – holding onto moisture and encouraging plant growth to further stabilise the soil.
  • Affordable: Coconut fiber is natural and an abundant renewable resource. This means that it is one of the most affordable soil erosion solutions. Saving the environment shouldn’t be an expensive undertaking and with these blankets, everyone can do their part.
