Which Erosion Control Blanket is right for you?

Aussie Environmental has a range of different Erosion Control Blankets, suitable for a variety of different applications. Whether you require a blanket for soil stabilisation, weed suppression or retaining moisture, we have the blanket right for you.

Weed Suppression

For soley weed suppression, Aussie Environmental has a polypropylene Weed Mat which is UV stabilised designed to inhibit weed growth, while still allowing water and air flow for healthy soil and plants. Alternatively if you’re after an erosion control blanket that also suppresses weeds, Jute Mat Blanket is the best for this application.

Strong and durable and easy to install yourself, AE Weed Matting can be laid over the top of soil or buried under ground.

Which one is right for you?

An Aussie Environmental coir blanket can help impede the erosion of sand and soil on your land, particularly on steep slopes. Heavy erosion can result in large financial and labour costs, caused by the resultant remediation efforts that are required to repair the land and re-establish natural or stock vegetation.

A coir blanket is made from 100% biodegradable organic coconut fibre and can last up to three years. They are a long lasting and very effective solution to land erosion. You can purchase rolls of these blankets in a variety of widths, lengths and grades, giving you the ability to cover a large portion of your land with one roll. Standard sizes of the blankets include the following:

Standard sizes of coir mesh rolls include the following:

Coir blanket vs coir mesh

The blankets have a tighter weave and are thicker than the mesh rolls. Essentially, the main reason to use blankets is to intercept any runoff from heavy downpours on steep slopes that would otherwise erode the soil and prevent revegetation, whereas the main reason to use the mesh is to stabilise the soil and give plants time to establish and regrow. Both the blankets and mesh prevent erosion due to heavy runoff and both encourage revegetation, they just have an emphasis on one or the other, as mentioned above.

Three benefits of using a coir blanket on your land

These organic blankets have a three pronged approach to helping you reclaim your land. They encourage revegetation, increase the retention of moisture and have minimal environmental impact.

  1. Revegetation: Organic blankets stabilise the soil and give plants the time they need to establish. Blankets are better for tube stock than seeds, because of their thickness (they would cover the seeds), but they can be easily placed around the plants. This allows you to grow plants on steep slopes that would normally struggle to establish in such an environment, simply because of the lack of soil stability. These blankets also help to keep down the growth of weeds, preventing them from out-competing your new tube stock.
  2. Moisture retention: Loss of soil on steep slopes also leads to loss of moisture, preventing revegetation. A coir blanket helps the soil to retain this essential moisture, giving your tube stock time to grow. This is achieved because the blanket not only covers the soil and prevents moisture loss, but also because the coconut fibres absorb moisture and keep it close to the ground.
  3. Minimal environmental impact: Since a coir blanket is made from 100% organic coconut fibre it’s also 100% biodegradable and adds organic fibre to the soil as it degrades (it takes up to three years to degrade). This means that Aussie Environmental organic blankets are very good for the soil!

When it comes to coir blanket erosion control our coir blankets are 100% natural coconut fibre that is manufactured into rolls in various grades and lengths. Coir is an abundant and renewable resource, increasingly used throughout the Civil and Landscape Industries in applications such as slope stabilisation, revegetation and bio-engineering. These blankets intercept runoff from heavy rains and dissipate the energy of flowing water and wind. Coir fibre promotes the growth of vegetation by absorbing water and preventing soil evaporation. Coir fibre is different to other natural fibres due to its very high lignin content, which increases the fibres strength and functional life of up to 2+ years.

Installation:

Aussie Environmental Coir Blanket, also named Coir Matting is easy to install and is fully biodegradable. Apart from the usual maintenance required to sustain the vegetation, no further work is needed after the main installation.

  1. Prepare the area to be treated to a smooth even grade. Remove all protruding rocks, root stumps, etc.
  1. Lay the Coir Blanket rolls in the direction of water flow. Adjoining rolls should be overlapped by a minimum of 100mm.
  1. The Coir Blanket should be overlapped away from prevailing wind and water flow direction.
  1. A trench, no less than 200mm deep, should be dug around the whole area including the bottom, sides and top of work area, this will protect the edges from being lifted during rain or flooding events. Backfill the trench and compact.
  1. Depending on the steepness of the slope, the Coir Blankets should be pinned with approximately 3-4 pins per meter squared, (i.e. the more pins used, the more secure the matting will be) with particular attention being paid to edges and joins. blankets joins should overlap by approximately 100mm with the top run overlapping bottom edge.
  1. If high water velocities are expected, more retaining pins are required.
  1.  Secure blanket using retaining pins. The type of soil on site will determine which length of pins to use. For rocky, hard compacted soil use shorter lengths, 100mm or 150mm pins. For loose sandy soils use longer pins, 200mm or 300mm pins.

What is coir?

Coir (pronounced COY-er) is the fibre from the outer husk of the coconut. It is a renewable resource and 100% biodegradable.
