Eco-Silt Fence™ - Biodegradable Jute Geotextile

A Silt Fence is a temporary structure designed to intercept and retain sediment as it travels across exposed soil while still allowing water drainage. The Eco-Silt Fence consists of a woven filter fabric commonly referred to as a Geotextile and is entrenched into the ground to prevent contaminants getting underneath. The Geotextile is attached to timber pegs or steel pickets for support.

Silt fences are generally considered the last line of defence against erosion and should be used in conjunction with other forms of erosion control methods. A silt fences main strength is the ability to trap larger soil particles such as sand and debris, however it has little effect on trapping finer soils such as clay. The Eco-Silt Fence is an eco-friendlier alternative to plastic silt fences and is ideal for installation in bushland, riparian zones and floodplain areas.

Where to Install a Silt Fence?

The silt fence should be installed on a site before soil disturbance or earth moving takes place. This should occur down slope from the construction area. The fence should always be installed along the contour of the slope you are protecting. If the fence is installed incorrectly, it will allow water to pool while increasing water flow and volume and create the possibility of the fence to be undermined and fail.

If installing a silt fence on a downward slope, it is important to construct a “J” or “Silt Fence Return”. These are positioned perpendicular to the silt fence, capturing sediment and slowing water flow. Silt fences are not designed to compete in areas of high flow water rates and should be installed where water can form shallow pools within the silt fence.
